Planning a wedding at The Waterside wedding venue in Hertfordshire means soft riverside views, a relaxed atmosphere and so many chances for beautiful, natural photos.
For Megan & James, The Waterside was the perfect place to bring everyone together – including James’ family and friends who flew all the way over from Melbourne, Australia. Their day was full of personality, heartfelt moments and so much laughter, and I loved capturing every second as their Hertfordshire wedding photographer.
Before I take you through their day, I have to share how it all began. It was actually Megan’s mum who first got in touch with me through a mutual friend. From that first message, I could tell how excited the family were and how much this wedding meant to them. By the time I met Megan & James, it already felt like I was joining a group of friends rather than “just” being their photographer – exactly the kind of connection I love to build with my couples.

The Waterside
If you’re at the stage of short‑listing wedding venues in Hertfordshire, The Waterside deserves a very serious look.
Set by the water with charming gardens, wooden bridges and a light‑filled marquee, it offers:
The ceremony marquee is especially photogenic. Megan & James chose a floral arch at the front, with lush greenery and white and lilac blooms that framed them perfectly. Suspended floral rings and a line of chairs down each side created a natural aisle that felt both elegant and inviting – a dream set‑up for anyone who loves a classic, romantic look without it feeling too formal.

The marquee
Under one of the floral arches, the guys looked sharp in their black tuxes with simple white shirts and button holes. The mood was light, full of banter, and that energy really comes through in the photos – especially the black‑and‑white shot later in the day where the groomsmen decided to lift James up and carry him across the lawn. Those are the kinds of candid, joy‑filled moments I always look out for.
Meanwhile, guests from near and far were arriving, including the Australian crew who had travelled halfway around the world to be there. Seeing hugs, reunions and happy tears as people spotted each other across the gardens was such a lovely part of the story to capture.

Groomsmen before the ceremony

Groomsmen have fun
Once everyone was seated in the marquee, it was time for the processional – and The Waterside wedding venue looked incredible. The draped ceiling, fairy lights and hanging floral rings created a soft, romantic feel that suited Megan’s style perfectly.
First down the aisle were the flower girls in their ivory dresses, cosy cardigans and purple sashes that tied in with the flowers. Hand‑in‑hand, they made their way through smiling rows of guests, setting such a sweet tone for what was to come.
Next came the bridesmaids in deep green dresses, carrying wildflower‑style bouquets. The rich colour looked gorgeous against the fresh greens of the florals and the neutral tones of the marquee.
And then, in a moment everyone had been waiting for, Megan entered on the arm of her mum. Megan’s dress was a soft A‑line gown with delicate lace detail and a flowing skirt that moved beautifully with every step. She carried a full bouquet of greenery and seasonal florals tied with lilac ribbons – a subtle nod to her colour palette.
Having photographed this Waterside wedding venue, I can honestly say the walk up that aisle is always special, but watching Megan and her mum share that moment together felt particularly emotional. You could see how proud she was.
During the ceremony, I made sure to capture not just the wide shots of the space, but also the little details that meant the world to Megan.
One of my favourite close‑ups from the day is of her bouquet ribbons, where she’d attached a charm with a photo and a tiny heart engraved with “Dad” and the words: “Today is the day I say ‘I do’, I carry this in memory of you.” It was a quiet, deeply personal tribute that she carried with her all day, and those are exactly the kinds of moments that tell the real story behind the celebration.
Under the floral arch, with the light coming in from the garden behind them, Megan & James exchanged vows and rings. There were plenty of laughs – they couldn’t stop smiling at each other – and the atmosphere in the marquee felt warm and full of love.
The photos of them holding hands, grinning at each other and finally being announced as married are some of the most joyful images from the whole gallery.

Big smiles from the married couple
After the confetti and congratulations, we slipped away for some relaxed portraits around the grounds. This is where The Waterside really shines as a Hertfordshire wedding venue.
We started by the outdoor gazebo surrounded by white florals and greenery. It gave us a soft, garden‑party feel with the river and trees in the background. James planted a kiss on Megan’s cheek while she laughed – a simple, natural moment that turned into one of their favourite images.
Next, we headed to the little wooden bridge over the water. The warm tones of the wood and the green foliage behind them created a lovely, natural frame. Standing there together, they had a quiet minute to breathe and just enjoy each other before heading back to their guests.
We also used some of the tucked‑away corners – a pretty bench framed by wooden fencing and foliage, and an area of long grasses and leaves that felt almost like a hidden garden. These spots are ideal if you love photos that feel intimate and a little more secluded, even when your venue is full of guests.
Throughout their portraits, Megan & James were relaxed, chatty and up for a giggle, which made it easy to capture them as they really are together – affectionate, fun and completely at ease.

Couples portraits
One of Megan’s priorities was making sure family played a big part in their photos. We created a set of group images that still felt relaxed and full of personality.
Under one of the flower‑topped garden arches, we photographed the bridesmaids and flower girls together – the rich green dresses and the girls’ ivory outfits worked so beautifully with the greenery around them.
On James’ side, friends from the UK and Melbourne came together for a series of group shots that quickly turned into playful lifting, joking and mid‑laugh expressions. I always encourage a few “everyone look here and smile” images, but I love moving into more fun prompts once those are done. They’re often the pictures that couples look back on and say, “That’s so us.”

Family love
When it comes to wedding cakes, Megan & James chose something that felt 100% “them” and made everyone smile – Colin the Caterpillar and Connie the Caterpillar, dressed as a bride and groom.
On their round cake table inside the venue, Colin and Connie stood side‑by‑side, complete with little decorations and details to turn them into a couple. It was such a fun, nostalgic choice, and a talking point for guests of all ages.
Instead of a formal tiered cake cutting, we had Megan and James laughing as they sliced through Colin and Connie together – champagne glass in hand and big grins all round. That photo sums up the feel of their day perfectly: relaxed, joyful and not afraid to do things their own way.

Looking back over Megan & James’ gallery, it’s clear why The Waterside wedding venue was such a good fit for them:
For couples searching for wedding venues in Hertfordshire that feel personal yet still offer those “wow” photo spots, The Waterside really strikes that balance.
