Hertfordshire Wedding Photographers | Helen Weir Photography
They met in a nightclub in 2014. Just a brief conversation. A few exchanged numbers. And then Jackie left to study for a year.
When she returned in March 2015, fate had other plans. Joe and Jackie ran into each other again at a local pub. Joe walked up to her and asked how she’d been. Jackie didn’t remember meeting him the year before. But from that moment on, she couldn’t take her eyes off him.
Their first official date was May 1st, 2015. Ten years later, they said “I do” at Down Hall Hotel in Hatfield Heath, surrounded by family, friends, and a love story that had quietly grown into something extraordinary.
I’m Helen Weir, a wedding photographer based in Hertfordshire, and this is the story of Joe and Jackie’s elegant, sophisticated, and deeply emotional Down Hall wedding.

Joe proposed to Jackie on December 26th, 2021, during a family meal at a cosy pub in Hampshire where Jackie’s mum lives. Halfway through dinner, he surprised her with the question she’d been dreaming of: “Will you marry me?”
It wasn’t grand or public. It was intimate. Personal. Exactly right for them.
When they started planning their wedding, they knew they wanted something timeless. Something elegant. Something that felt like them.
They chose Down Hall Hotel, a stunning historic venue on the Essex and Hertfordshire border, known for its grand architecture, lush gardens, and romantic atmosphere. It’s one of my favorite venues to photograph, and it was the perfect backdrop for Joe and Jackie’s vision.
I arrived at Down Hall just after midday. The sky was grey and threatening rain, but inside, the energy was calm and joyful.
Jackie was getting ready in room 104 with her six bridesmaids. The room smelled like hairspray and perfume. Champagne glasses sat on the windowsill. Her dress hung on the the four poster, hidden from everyones view, a vision from Tilly Mint Weddings.
Her bridesmaids wore metallic taupe dresses from Rewritten London. Simple. Elegant. Timeless. Exactly the vibe Jackie wanted. They carried white rose bouquets tied with mocha ribbon.
Best Bride Beauty were working their magic on hair and makeup. Jackie’s hair was swept into a soft romantic half up, half down style. Her makeup glowed. She looked like herself, only elevated.
While I captured the bridal prep, my second shooter was with Joe and the groomsmen. They were getting ready in the Glascock Suite. Slaters Menswear had outfitted them in classic grey suits with Joe and his son in light beige suits. Joe looked calm. Confident. Ready.

It was time for bridal portraits in the lounge. Jackie’s bridesmaids were dressed and ready.
Jackie’s mum helped her into her dress. She looked stunning. The fit. The way it moved. Perfect.
I captured natural moments of Jackie with her bridal party. Laughter. Hugs. A few quiet moments where you could see the emotion starting to build.
The ceremony took place in the Oxford Suite at 2.30pm.
The room was stunning. Half windows along one wall let in soft natural light. Two grand chandeliers hung from the ceiling, casting a warm glow over the space. The aisle was lined with tall clear vases filled with white candles and scattered white rose petals.
Guests filled the gold Chiavari chairs. The room hummed with anticipation.
And then the doors opened.
Their son walked in first. Carrying the rings in a little black case. He walked down that aisle like he owned it. The guests melted.
Then came the bridesmaids. Six of them in metallic taupe. They glided down the aisle carrying white rose bouquets. Elegant. Confident. Beautiful.
And then Jackie appeared at the top of the aisle with her dad.
The room went silent. Her dress moved like water. Her smile was radiant. Joe’s face said everything. Pride. Love. A little bit of disbelief that this was really happening.
The ceremony itself was beautiful. The registrar from Essex County Council led them through their vows. Joe’s voice was steady. Jackie’s was soft but sure.
When they were pronounced husband and wife, the room erupted in applause. They kissed. They laughed. They walked back down the aisle as Mr and Mrs.

Couple get married at Down Hall Hotel
After the ceremony, it was time for family formals.
The plan was to shoot outside. But the rain had other ideas.
So we improvised. We gathered groups in the grand doorway at the back of Down Hall. My second shooter held an umbrella over me while I directed the shots. Guests laughed. No one complained. It was one of those moments where you just roll with it.
The photos turned out beautifully. The doorway provided natural framing. The soft light from the rain made everyone’s skin glow. Sometimes the best moments come from things not going to plan. And then we were presently surprised when halfway through shooting the sun came out in full force.
It was time for Joe and Jackie’s couples portraits.
This is my favourite part of any wedding day. The part where I get to be alone with the couple. No timeline pressure. No guests waiting. Just the two of them and my camera.
We wandered around the grounds of Down Hall. The rain had stopped. The air smelled fresh. The light was soft and romantic.
I told Jackie to work it like a model. She laughed. Joe laughed. And then she actually did it. She moved. She smiled. She leaned into Joe. The camera loved her. He couldn’t take his eyes off her.
Those portraits are some of my favourites from the entire day. Not because they’re perfectly posed. Because they’re perfectly them. Relaxed. Joyful. In love.

Unbreakable love at the elegant Down Hall Hotel
The reception took place in one of Down Hall’s stunning event spaces.
Round tables were dressed in mocha linens. A long top table sat at the front of the room. Champagne details and vintage gold accents were scattered throughout. White florals by Halo Blossom adorned every table.
The room felt warm. Intimate. Elegant.
Guests enjoyed a beautiful wedding breakfast catered by Down Hall’s talented team. The food was incredible. The atmosphere was joyful.
At 6:30pm, the speeches began.
Jackie’s dad spoke first. Then her stepdad. Both were emotional. Both were funny. Both made Jackie cry happy tears.
Joe’s brother gave a best man speech that had the room roaring with laughter. And then Joe stood up. He thanked everyone. He told Jackie how much he loved her.
It was the kind of speech that reminds you why weddings matter.

At 8pm ish, it was time to cut the cake.
The cake by Cake Cuisine Essex was a showstopper. Elegant tiers. White & Gold tones. Almost too beautiful to cut.
Jackie tossed her bouquet. The single ladies rushed the floor.
And then the moment that made everyone lose it.
Joe took his mother-in-law to the dance floor. Not for a slow dance. For a full spin-her-around, laugh-out-loud, joy-filled moment. The guests cheered. The energy was electric.
When it was time for the first dance, the guests parted like the Red Sea. The room went quiet. The lights dimmed. Joe and Jackie swayed together under the glow of the chandeliers.
And then the party really started.
Love Light Entertainment kept the energy high all night. The dance floor was packed. Guests twirled. Laughed. Celebrated.
At 9:30pm, we snuck outside for some nighttime shots. The rain had cleared. The grounds of Down Hall looked magical in the evening light.

Pure love at Down Hall Hotel
Down Hall is one of my favourite wedding venues in Hertfordshire and Essex.
The historic building. The elegant event spaces. The beautiful grounds. It’s a venue that gives you sophistication without stuffiness. Grandeur without pretense.
It’s perfect for couples who want a timeless, elegant wedding with a sense of history.
Joe and Jackie’s wedding was a perfect example of what makes Down Hall so special. The venue provided the elegance. They brought the love and personality. Together it was magic.
Joe and Jackie’s September wedding at Down Hall was everything.
Two first looks with her dads. Their son walking down the aisle with the rings. Family photos in the rain. Couples portraits filled with laughter. A reception that felt like a warm hug. A groom dancing with his mother-in-law. A first dance that made everyone cry.
It was elegant. Emotional. Timeless. Exactly what a wedding should be.
